APRIL HIOSIK IGNACIO
April grew up on the Tohono O’odham Nation and is raising her small family in the center of District 3 in Sells, Arizona. She is a graduate of Baboquivari High School and Tohono O’odham Community College. She is the Warehouse and Fleet Manager at Tohono O’odham Ki:Ki Association, the tribal Housing Authority.
As a blue collar worker, she is no stranger to the demands of raising a family financially and maintaining a household on top of organizing and dedication to the community.
COMMITTED TO THE COMMUNITY
Since her teens, April has volunteered and organized in her community creating opportunities for youth and the community, including youth Basketball Leagues, Summer Camps and tournaments, Annual PRIDE in the Plaza Celebration and Civic Engagement and Education.
In 2017, she co-founded Indivisible Tohono with her friends, which is a powerhouse grassroots, community-based organization focused on state and federal legislation impacting the Tohono O’odham Nation.
During the COVID-19 pandemic she began the Rez Babes Book Club, a monthly virtual book club with nationwide membership that highlights the creative works of Indigenous authors.
She has curated several community exhibits on topics such as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Red Dress exhibition and A Women’s Artist Community Installation. Most recently, she co-curated Cause and Effect: That’s What You Get! for the Arizona State Museum, which explores themes of tribal sovereignty and community resilience through artistic re-interpretations of Tohono O’odham traditional stories.
